Trauma Treatment and PTSD
Trauma is a response to a deeply distressing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope and diminishes a person’s sense of self. Trauma is often considered subjective, as it is a person’s internal beliefs and their innate sensitivity to the stress of these events. Many individuals who experience a traumatic event may have difficulty coping and adjusting, but with time, they get better. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops in response to experiencing or witnessing a distressing event. If an individual’s symptoms get worse, lasts for months to years and interfere with day-to-day activities, it might be PTSD.
